Another week in the Scandle Radio studio brought us the guys from Underground Canopy. I was joined by Necky (Trumpet/Flugelhorn), Warren (Bass) and Jonathan (Keys) to chat about their stunning 1st album. Bluestaeb and S. Fidelity Present Underground Canopy, released on the Japanese/French label MENACE, draws inspiration from the likes of Yesterday’s New Quintet, BadBadNotGood and Butcher Brown to deliver a hip-hop/neo soul infused Jazz project. Produced by Jakarta Records’ own Bluestaeb and S. Fidelity, this LP was everything I was wishing to come across when I decided to focus on the Jazz scene. So It was such a good feeling to discuss with those musicians who are most importantly pretty cool fellas.
Talking about Butcher Brown, this here selection features their latest single. “Tidal Wave” is a cover from Ronnie Laws’ 1975 gem which entered immaculate status after Black Moon sampled the track on “Who Got Da Props”, a hip-hop classic off of their 1993 album Enta Da Stage. This mix also features a cut from Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrian Younge collaboration LP with the legend Roy Ayers. It’s the second installment from their very Jazz Is Dead series. Lindha Kallerdahl, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Andreas Werliin‘s Rainbow remains one of my favorite album this year and I’m glad to share with you the second take of their track “We Are”.
