55 days. That’s how long the lockdown has lasted in France. Crazy times y’all. Hope during this whole pandemic you and your close ones been safe. A lot of people had to adjust their lifestyle. But I’m happy that we are seeing some type of advancement in the right direction. Most of the social spaces and cultural venues are still close but at least we can go out in the sun as we want. To me, being at home hasn’t been easy creatively. I understand now that I feed myself from going out there, meeting and sharing conversations and ideas in real life with people. I guess this situation got me reflecting on how we need to adjust in the future and how we are going to be required to use these electronic tools to stay connected.
Lucky me I have incredible friends and Bertrand had the great idea to open his vacant house to host us for a creative retreat. After doing a little work in the house, we invested the place with our gear. Painters, filmmakers, musicians, DJ, writers, all types of artistic mind were brought together. My role was to set the musical mood, playing day long sets from “Rise and shine” themed session in the morning to dancefloor ready mighty adventures in the night. That inspired me to go back to my Catching The Vibe bag and cook up this new episode.
Coming out of Melbourne, La Sape Records has been dropping heat since its initial launch back in 2007. The label headed by Kurt Paradise has really been the place to look for releases by the up-and-coming jazz talents out of Australia. After releasing gems Horatio Luna and Godriguez’s Godtet, we are given an 11-track EP by pianist and producer On-Ly. Inspired by fusion-era Miles Davis, BROTH takes us on psychedelic side of 70s grooves with tight piano improvisation.
Two years after Rise Up, her sophomore album, Washington Heights’ own Lakecia Benjamin is back with Pursuance : The Coltranes. This Coltrane tribute project affirms its singularity by paying hommage to John, obviously, but Alice Coltrane too. The alto-saxophonist/producer is joined by heavy hitters such as Jazzmeia Horns, Marcus Strickland, Ron Carter and Meshell Ndegeoccello (to name a few) to tackle classics such as Giant Steps‘ “Syeeda’s Song Flute”.
More dope stuff in here to enjoy. Hope you’ll feel this mix.
